I recently posted an article in this forum regarding dry sailing. In a nutshell, lifting eyes have drastically changed the game for Ensign sailors, and the general consensus in the responses to the article was agreement that the ‘recommendation’ to dry sail in the ECA Rules (which was written in the mid 1960’s) should be stricken.

Please review the article to see all the pros and cons of dry sailing. From environmental issues to cost savings to ease of bottom maintenance, dry sailing your Ensign is a concept whose time has come (you know… like all the other small keel boats… J24’s, J22’s, Harbor 20’s, etc).

My club rated me at 262 so right about where you are. My understanding is that the rating should be 260 to 270. You’re already giving up two points over the speedy side of the standard for an Ensign rating. Tell them to up there game instead of trying to tear you down. Punks!

I am racing my Ensign PHRF as there are no other boats around. Rating is 258 - which seems to be around the average number. We have been doing fairly well. A good combination of boat handling and the rating, My boat is dry sailed. Along with the success there have already been "rumblings" about the rating and that it should be adjusted for the dry sailing. Has anyone encountered this issue and also - what does the Class think about it? I want to be fair but we sail well and I think that has a lot to do with the success :2-1-1-1 in the last 4 races and last night we smoked most of the Fleet by alot! Think that pissed them off! HA!
