Ensign Sailing Forum

New to the Ensign Clan
Author Last Post
Hi Lindsey: Welcome to the Ensign crew ! I have not sailed the other boats you mentioned. I have sailed Lasers, 420's and crewed/sailed other boats in the 32-40' range. I just joined this forum this year and have found it to be a nice community.

The things I love about the Ensign class are:
- it feels like a little big boat and also feels like a big little boat
- you get all the fun of main, jib and spinnaker, if you want all that; you can also keep is simple with a small jib and a reefed main - all of this will depend on the wind in your area and how much you want to push yourself/what you are comfortable with/what your crew's skill levels are
- you get all the fun of a big boat because the cockpit is roomy and you can fit 5-6 adults comfortably - great for a day sail or a picnic - also, great to spread out and take a nap on a quiet air day; pack a small cooler, bring your sunscreen and you're out for a great time
- simple straightforward rig lets you get off the mooring quickly
- nice classic line with a reverse transom; I like the feel of the keel when we are out - it rides nicely through still and choppy water
- I would say that the Ensign looks similar to a Cape Dory Typhoon - I see them both in similar harbors
- boats are like houses - big house, big problems; little boat, little problems - cost of owning an Ensign may be less than what you would pay for a larger vessel (not that you were indicating you want something larger - I just have found that proportional rule to be true.)

Maybe we can find someone who can take you out for a spin in an Ensign?

Thanks Robert! I will look into it. I’ve tried reaching out to the Fleet Captain on Lake Dillon (by Frisco) with no luck yet. Maybe looking into the school will get me moving in the right direction.

Thanks again!

If you are looking for an Ensign to use in Colorado, there was a guy who has a sailing school in Frisco CO that had 2 ensigns for sale last year, Think he still has them. I do not have contact info, but look for a sailing school in Frisco or nearby.

Hello all,

I’m new to the Ensign following. I was converted after a search for and visit to a Corinthian (another Alberg design) at Lake Dillon lead my buddy and I to an Ensign on the dry. We actually got to the marina before the owner selling the Corinthian got there and thought the Ensign was the Corinthian…needless to say we were disappointed to learn it was not the boat we were looking at and as a result all we could think of was the Ensign we had seen. So, now here I am

looking for the right one to bring up to the Front Range of Colorado.

My question is this: since I’ve never actually sailed one, I was wondering if anyone had sailed one of the several vessels I’ve been on to help me relate to the feel of the boat I should expect. I’ve sailed: Cape Dory 27, Merit 25, J-22, and a Catalina 25. I suspect the Ensign feels something like a cross between a J-22 and the CD 27. What are your thoughts?

Thanks and super excited to be apart of the Ensign community.

Lindsey
