Thanks for the feed back guys.

I've been towing utility, small boat & equipment trailers for years and was always impressed with the Touareg but the Ensign is next level.

I realize once you get over 2,000 lbs towing weight, trailer brakes are a necessity.

Upgraded brake system and maintaining your driveline more frequently than the manual suggests will help keep your tow vehicle up to job also.

I heartily agree Bud! Having been a non-trailer sailer for the many years before downsizing to the Ensign, that's something I'd not even thought about when shopping for my current boat. But trailering it home across a couple of mountain ranges I was very pleasantly surprised by the ease and peace of mind having the brakes afforded.

Prior trailering experience was some 40 years ago, but with much lighter boats. The Ensign is a substantial load for just 22'.

Trailer brakes, either surge or electrical (and I have come to believe electrical is better) are a MUST for safe Ensign towing. Not many vehicles are equipped with brakes to accommodate a 4500 pound tow-load (3000 boat + 1500 trailer) in addition to the tow vehicle itself.

Towing down the road, oblivious drivers constantly fill the intentionally long, braking distance, which needs to be maintained between you and the driver ahead. When they brake, and they almost invariably do, your vehicle's brakes are going to quickly overheat if all the stopping force for the tow and your vehicle must be provided by your vehicle's brakes.

Just an FYI from a much traveled Ensign sailor.

Tony,

Yes, all trips described were with my Touareg. The towing setup on the Touareg easily handles the Ensign. The only thing that caught me off guard was the lighting adaptor - the Touareg is a round socket - I needed an adaptor to convert to the straight plug on the trailer.

Saratoga is a pretty good ride from here SW Virginia - map program estimates a bit over 9 hours skirting North Jersey/NYC, a little more then 600 miles. Not quite as far as my trip up to Charlevoix, MI to pick up the boat though! If you decide to move forward, maybe we could agree to meet halfway or so? Harrisburg, PA is about 300 miles (though 4 hours?) to my north.

The plan right now is to launch my boat this Tuesday (weather permitting). I’ll bring the trailer home where I’ll keep it until it’s sold. If it would help with your decision I could send additional pictures? And, of course, answer any additional questions you might have.

Thanks for your interest.

Regards,

Tony,

I towed mine with my 6cyl Nissan Pathfinder with no issues. Pathfinder is rated for 5000lbs and 300lbs tongue weight. My trailer has breaks also.

Hi Bill,

I am interested in this trailer.

Did you tow it with a Touareg is see in the 1st picture? I am also interested your experience towing with the Touareg since I also own a similar generation Touareg.

Only issue is that I am in upstate NY (Saratoga)

Thanks,

Tony Cannone

I purchased #1622 about three years ago in Charlevoix Michigan with a trailer. The trailer is a converted Caravelle trailer, equipped with surge brakes, double axel, extending tongue and mast rack.

I trailered the boat home from Charlevoix to Washington, NC. Then I pulled the boat up to Bristol, VA, and just recently to Smith Mountain Lake. All trips have been absolutely trouble free. It really tows like a dream.

The boat will go in the water next week and the trailer will then be available for purchase.

Before loading the boat for this last trip I had the marina shop inspect the trailer and re-grease the bearings. As it sits right now, it's ready to go anyplace in the country.

I"m somewhat at a loss as to what the value of this trailer really is. But based on what some of the new prices are, I'm asking $2500 or best offer. Happy to answer any questions via email or phone (w.cheadle@frontier.com / 904-303-8404). Also willing to work out transport, full or part way. We're currently located just outside Roanoke, VA.
