Ensign Racing - Hosting 2 races - Spinnaker vs JAM...

I'd like to learn more about how clubs are doing two Ensign races - one with spinnakers and one without. It seems like the JAM (Jibs & Mains) option, though less about speed and national aspirations, might get more folks on the water with a 2 people on board, rather the 3+ for spinnakers. I'm assessing the viability of the JAM alternate category based on fleet size. Does your fleet support two types of races? If yes, about how many boats in your local area and how many participate in each category?

If you are willing to share your fleet's experience with me, happy to hear from you !

We look at the competitors and figure it out.
If everyone can’t fly a chute we just use jib and main unless we can more crew around to all use chutes.

We do it all the time. We have 5 Ensigns, and can do one race with Spinnakers, and in without. For boats choosing not to use spinnakers you can use a handicap system if you want. Bob

Hi Samantha,

Great question and I'll bet there are a few fleets thinking about whether JAM or Spinnaker racing is a better option for their members. For the Niantic Bay CT fleet we are fortunate to have an active Wednesday night Non Spinnaker series and a Sunday Spinnaker series for Ensigns. I do not think we would have enough boats to do 2 fleets on the same day so the different days works out really well. On both Wednesday and Sunday there is socializing afterwards. The socializing is great and can be informative regardless of Spinnaker or Non Spinnaker format.

I would encourage non Spinnaker fleets or skippers to see if they can't work in a few Spinnaker days into the schedule to have the experience of it. With foil less furling of the Jib available, very easy install, three total crew can handle a Spinnaker in most breezes. An option is to do a late morning seminar or practice for crew and skippers to learn and then do a race in the afternoon. I would not shy away from the Spinnaker. Once mastered it's a lot of fun and adds a whole other dimension to racing.
