i skipper Iliad 1385, a boat brought from the South Carolina/Florida area about 5-6 years ago to Ohio, where it was never put into the water until this year.
Planning on sailing any boat requires preparation. This boat has a beautiful new IGU fiberglass cabin installed by the previous owner. I became suspicious of bad things when I saw open cell foam in the bilge beneath the cabin floor, but reassured myself that this expensive IGU was installed by a professional.
The day before Ensign nationals, the floor under the mast step gave way, and a pilot hole under the mast step confirmed only foam was present, no supports or stringers.
After digging out a FULL bag of water saturated open cell foam, we did a proper fix with supports.
I’m really only posting this as a reminder to fix things right the first time, and if the job is hired out, check the work.
I’m grateful to Bob Conkey and his crew for their expertise, guidance and support. I know what good work they do at their shop and know they cut no corners!
