Air Pocket in Keel
Author Last Post
Hi Robin,
When I drained the water out of Plebe Year, the small drain holes continued to weep for several weeks.
When I got the extra resin layer out of the Bilge well it had absorbed water and was still damp.
My thinking is that barrier coatings on the outside of the hull keep water out, but also keep water in.
So if water collects in the bilge well or keel void it will be absorbed by the hull fiberglass unless it is drained out.
Having drain holes that can be left open when the boat is on the trailer in the winter allows the water to drain out and the hull inside to dry out.
I may have addressed this problem with the large brass drain hole in Questar and Plebe year.
Questar is long term (20 years) Plebe year yet to be launched!

So, I have drilled per the diagram and the good news is no water. The other news is that I have water gradually weeping out of the laminate in the area of the keel mostly within 30 inches forward of the rudder post. I have occasionally done a little drilling into the specific dots where the weeping has occurred and then filled with epoxy and repainted. But the water gradually weeping out in the offseason has continued though it does not seem to degrade the overall surface much from season to season.

I am wondering if I anyone has had success addressing this problem?

Thanks so much!

Robin

Jonathan,

Thanks for the link - and the diagram. It will be very helpful to know where to drill to check for water for real.

Thanks again

Robin

I would monitor but if you feel the need put a small drain plug in that area.

Zeke.

Sorry about the link Robin, I linked to the article on the Ensign website and of course the link was only valid for my log in.

So a pdf of the article is attached.

Thank you Bill Tonetti for letting me know the link didn't work.

Hi Robin
Pete Kogut and I spent some time looking at this question last fall and wrote an article with suggestions for those of us that live up North. This was in the fall Newsletter!!
Here is a link to it on the Ensign class website.

Hi all, hoping for some pointers on what to do with the air pocket in Ensign Keels. Last fall I was worried I had water in the keel area low down and forward of the rudder so I drilled some small holes there to see if there was any weeping or water. Fortunately there was no water coming out and the holes are small enough that I can easily fill them and seal up the holes I made. But it does lead me to the question of if I should do anything about the voids that are in that area of the keel or just monitor for water egress at end of season.

Any thoughts out there?

Robin
