Seeking - Roller Furler and lazy jacks
Peter Smith

Looking for a roller furler and lazy jack setup recommendations. If you are looking to get rid of one, or have any ideas on where to look, I'd appreciate any input.

Thanks!

Peter,

There are lots of very good articles in the ECA website library.

Here is a review on the Bartels RF system, which is the system I would install on Lorelei if I were going to install one (which I very well may do, someday!):

Peter,

I have an older Harken furling system (and older Doyle furling #1) that I’m happy to let go for very cheap. Full disclosure:

  • it is not performance-oriented - given its “vintage” it sits fairly high above the deck as the furling drum does not have enough room for the forestay turnbuckle
  • you will need to get the foils as mine were damaged when we took it off, as well as the furling line

Let me know,

Mauricio

Peter -

I picked up a lazy jack kit from Nautos - their small size. But it really only contains 180" of line, two cheek blocks, four small blocks and some small eye straps. Probably cheaper to source from a place like Defender.

The only modification I made was to get 50' of Paracord (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B081VVNLC9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1) and use that for the first leg aft of the mast. This lets me pull the lazy jack down and forward to hook them under a cleat. This "stores" the system running along the boom and mast. I sail with them "stored" and leave them stored at the mooring. Simply unhook from the cleat to deploy them.

The only downside is that the paracord isn't strong enough to act as a topping lift, but I have ideas on how to deal with that. Next years project
