Halyard Replacements - metal to rope or just rope?
Author Last Post
One issue I've had with the metal/rope combination halyard is that the metal is more likely to jump the sheave at the top of the mast due to smaller circumference and possibly less friction holding it in the groove. Once that metal jams into the side of the sheave I had to unstep the mast and bang on that thing for a long time until it came free.

I stick with all-rope halyards now.

My understanding is that the metal/rope combination was used in the 1960's because the rope available at that time stretched too much. I believe modern low stretch ropes have solved that problem, and an all-rope halyard works well.

One advantage of the all-rope halyard is that if you inadvertently let go of the bitter end of the halyard, it will not fly up to the top of the mast as the metal/rope version invariably does.

As with all things boating, people may have feedback and opinions regarding halyards. I understand there are two main choices for the main or jib halyards - rope to metal plus a shackle to the sail or rope with halyard hitch with or without a shackle to the sail. I assume metal to rope is stronger and more durable. I have also heard others say that in the scheme of sailboats, Ensign sails are not that large and rope to metal is not necessary. Would like to get some feedback on pros/cons of either from all of you. What factors have you considered when replacing halyards?

Found this item which seems like a suitable easy replacement for the main. https://www.drmarine.com/proddetail.asp?prod=DS805.
