I don't remember the model, but I believe I did cut the rods. They ended up at 29". You need to position the receiver on the boom not so far aft that the kicker comes out when the boom rises or that the boom isn't held high enough when the sail is dropped, but not so far forward that it prevents the boom from dropping to its normal position.

Sounds like the K0500 is the right one. Good info on the lengths. Thanks for that.

Ensign 1149 has a topping lift made from Dyneema this works perfect
A kicker or ridged boom vang will push the gooseneck out plus it costs more and adds bulk to the vang area.

note below from tech support at boomkicker in answer to my question:

My ensign sailboat has roller reefing in the boom, which I do not use.  How do I use a boomkicker with such a boom?

Hi Richard,

It shouldn't be a problem if the boom is locked in the upright position. As the Boomkicker pushes up, if it can do it by rolling the boom one way or the other, it will try. That rolling back and forth puts a lot of stress on the fittings and fasteners so it's best if the boom is locked upright. If your boom can roll, we offer a roll stop fitting, it mounts on the mast, just below the boom and has straps that attach to the boom. It allows the boom to swing and move but stops the rolling. Customers also create there own solutions like using set screws or drilling and pinning the gooseneck.

Looks like we have sold the K0500 to a number of Ensigns, I have it down as a 22 foot boat.  It got good reviews but no one mentioned a rolling boom so not sure this is the same boat.

Let me know if I can answer any questions or help further.

Best regards,

Ted Corlett

i have a boomkicker and love it.

Fantastic. It does look nice for single handling.

Which model did you buy and did you have to modify it? Any install issues?

Thanks!

I installed one on my old Ensign #340.

Great! So did you get the K0500? Do you remember cutting down the fiberglass rods any?

Docs say angle at boom should be 30-45, but with only about 13" of mast between the cabin top and boom, I figure I need to cut them down from 36" to 26" to get 30 degrees.

What's a boomkicker?

It's an alternative to a topping lift. It merely holds the boom up; a vang is still required.

As mentioned, it will interfere if you still have the spring loaded rotating boom reefing system.

I installed one on my old Ensign #340. Didn't bother on my new one #2016. I removed the lazy jacks that came on the boat - just too much trouble for a boat this size - and don't have a topping lift. So it's important to remember to clip the end of the boom to the backstay before lowering the sail. The only time this is a problem for me is when reefing. It would be nice to have the kicker holding up the boom when doing that.

As Bud said they are not class legal,  assuming you are talking about the kind that lifts the boom as well as pulls it down. I do not think they would work in the up lift direction with the standard class gooseneck hardware. That's because the boom is actually on a spring loaded detent at the mast so you can pull the boom aft and rotate it a turn or two for reefing.  The boom kicker would tend to push the boom aft and release the boom from its detent
I have not actually seen this happen, but have used boom kickers on other boats and guessing it won't work well.

Boomkickers are not class legal, but I have seen them on boats that do not race.

Does anybody here have a boomkicker installed? If so, I've got questions...

Thanks!
