Main Sail Telltales
Author Last Post
Tell-tales are very useful and the characteristics to look for are durability and quick drying, imo. Definitely worth the effort and having on the sails.

I like half-inch-wide, well-singed, rip-stop, sewn onto the leech of the main. For the genoa, I try to place them in the center of a window where possible, away from the stitching to prevent tangles and catches. Three sets give great feedback on how the wind is flowing around the sail.

I also place very light, quick drying, cassette tape tell tales on my shrouds. Though not very durable, they are inexpensive and easily replaced.

ZZ Top tell-tales are the best!

Hi Gay,

I think telltales on the sail are very useful, especially upwind. I found these with a quick search. After enquiring, I learned that they are selling packs of 7 pairs for $10. I'm sure you can find similar offerings.

Bill

Hi all,

I bought new sails about 8 years ago and it came with four telltales on the main. They have now worn down to nubs are are useless. I asked my sailmaker about putting on new ones and he said that I could just tape them on myself.

Has anyone else done this?

What material did you use for the tell tale? Yarn (wool, polyester?) Ribbon (width, satin?)

What did you use to fasten the tell tale to the sail?

Or do you just not bother?
