Location for bilge pump exhaust/blower
Tom Tolleson

Hello!

We recently bought an ensign which has electrical and we added an electric bilge pump. We’re just draining it over the side for now but the exhaust has an optional one-way exhaust fitting for drainage out through the hull. What I’m wondering is - if I add this exhaust, what is the recommended location for the bilge exhaust on an Ensign?

Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

We found that the shortest distance is best. 3 inches below the rubrail starboard or port under the winch post.

We ran ours out the stern. No worries about water coming back in when heeled over. We also found in our salty environment, it was hard to maintain the wiring. Now we use a boom tent and almost no water gets in the boat, even with heavy driving rain.

I mounted mine forward in the keel so I could attach a bracket I fashioned from aluminum stock to the support below the companionway. Then I ran the hose just forward of the winch, port side maybe a bit lower than ideal. But wit the light winds on the lake where I sail, no problems.

BTW, I have a full cover, not just a boom tent. I haven't installed the permanent battery yet, so when I went to the boat recently with a weego portable battery to test out the pump, I was surprised to find a bone dry bilge! I have to engage my canvass bucket to complete the testing!

Good info and the photos are awesome! Thanks!

Thanks for the comment. It sounds like the boom tent is the investment we should be making next. Then we can see if the bilge exhaust is necessary.

thanks for all the comments and help!
