Recommended way to attach traveller to the boom
Author Last Post
Yep… the threads of ss fasteners need Lanocote or Corrosion-X for electrolysis protection in aluminum.

Good rigging practice.

Thanks Bud.

Good info everyone, I appreciate all the replies.

I raced last night with the traveller attached to the tang in my boom cap but I wasn't sure that would hold under stress. Also. I had seen a Harken diagram that showed the traveller attached beneath.

Good to know I'm already doing it correctly and won't need to make any new installation!

Thanks again everyone!

Tom

Proper place to attach the main sheet blocks is the back end of the boom, not underneath.  There is a bolt that comes out of the cap at the back end of the boom. Two ss tangs hang from this bolt. One hangs down and you attach the mainsheet blocks to it. The other swivels up and you attach it to a hook that hangs from the backstay and when parking the boat this hold your boom up.  If these tangs are missing ask the group to provide a picture. Ensign spars should have the parts of you are not a handy man with stainless steel.  Also check the Ensign web site and yearbook, you likely will see pictures of the tangs and how the boom is attached to backstay

Bud is correct, you should never have stainless steel (or any other metal) in contact with the aluminum spar. In the even you need to attach a bail for your mainsheet tackle, I would suggest Lanocote, made by Forespar. Tap a hole for your fastener then dip it into the Lanocote before threading into the spar.

And you never should, if you can avoid it. Stainless and aluminum do not like each other and electrolysis eventually will cause a failure.

The easiest way to prevent this electrolysis is to simply apply electrical tape to the back of any stainless fitting, then trim it up with an exacto so it cannot be seen. The tape will act as a gasket to keep the two metals separated. Others use Corrosion-X spray, but I have found that does not last as long...

Most Ensign booms have two tangs that are bolted to the aft side of the boom end cap. One is for clipping the boom to the backstay with a swedged-on lanyard and hook, and the other is for hanging the blocks for the mainsheet system.

Hello!

I have recently attached some new traveller hardware to my deck but there's no hardware on my boom to attach the traveller to. Is there a recommended system to attach an eyestrap or other piece of hardware to the bottom of my boom to shackle the block to?

Method of attachment recommendations are especially appreciated. I've never attached stainless steel to aluminum before.

Thanks!
