Torqeedo Remote Throttle
Author Last Post

I'm using a generic outboard cover - think I bought it on ebay. It's kind of a loose fit, have it tied on at the bottom so the cord is under no strain...was cheap too :)

Bill -

I purchased a Torqueedo cover for the motor less battery, it's a very tight fit. Somewhat concerned about how the cord coming out the top of the motor gets bent at an extreme angle when the cover is on. Have you experienced any problems with this, or is your cover not the one sold by Torqueedo (at a pretty stiff price)?

Gents,

I keep my battery-less motor covered, so I'm not quite sure where I grab it, but I have no difficulty raising, lowering and locking the motor down (for reverse operation) with the cover on and no battery mounted.

Keep in mind it is quite a bit lighter without the battery. It's still a two hand operation, I kneel on the aft end of the cockpit seat and lean over the afterdeck, first grabbing the motor under the cover by it's aft end with my left hand, then releasing the catch with my right hand to lower it. I then push the lock down with my left hand to prevent the motor from jumping up in reverse. Later once my main is up, I reach back and pull the lock up with my left, then grab the motor again by it's aft end and simply pull it up until I hear the click of the catch.

At 71 I'm not the most spry of sailors, but don't find this too difficult to do. Of course, if Torqueedo were to see in in their hearts to motorize the process, well, I might be interested...

Here is a video of a person who removed the battery cells from the battery box to make their own remote battery. I assume this would seem to leave an empty battery box that can still be mounted on the motor to facilitate tilting the power unit up and out of the water.

This modification voids any warranty on your battery, and may not be safe, so it is presented to foster discussion only.

Dick,

I had the same thought driving home today from Saratoga Lake after I put my boat in. If the battery is not mounted on the Torqeedo drive unit, how can I tilt it out of the water?

We would need something like an empty battery box.  Torqeedo sells a replacement shell for the tiller, but, as far as I know, not for the battery.

I purchased a Torqueedo outboard, remote and battery extension cable, and plan to use it as you describe. I've only had the motor on a stand to test so far (plan to launch next week - been COLD in Milwaukee). With the battery removed, I'm at a loss to figure how to grab the assembly to tilt the motor up when under sail? How do you accomplish this? I have a standard Ensign Spars motor mount on the stern.

Vic,

I recently switched to the remote throttle. I have a battery extender and bag, and keep the battery down on the floor next to the rudder post. Until needed, the throttle stays in the bag. When I use it, I just reach down and set it up next to the tiller and work it from there. I'm still mulling whether I need to do something more "formal" in locating it. I'll probably wait until after the summer before drilling any holes.

That said, I won't go back to the tiller, even though mine now has the extended handle. It'll be going up for sale, so if you want to continue with that method, make me an offer I can't refuse.

If anyone here uses the Torqeedo Remote Throttle, can you tell me where you mount it?

I'm having an issue with the Power switch on my Torqeedo tiller, and it might be both less expensive and more convenient to get the Remote Throttle instead of repairing or replacing the tiller.
