Boom Vang and Winch Handle
Author Last Post
For the boom vang you can forget about the origanol method of attaching to mast. A far better way is to simply make a loop of line and luggage tag it around the base of the mast. You connect your vang to that loop. You put the loop just under the jib and main halyard cheek blocks and it will not slide up the mast. It's simple to make it out of 3/16 inch dia spectra line. Spectra is simple to splice, but knots would work as well as other sizes and types of line.  Many vangs also were attached to a deck fitting , this is a bad idea as it gets too tight as the boom swings out

Donnie,

No promises, but we have an old wreck of an Ensign here that uses the old winches.  It regrettably will never sail again.  When I get home Monday, I will try to talk the owner out of a winch handle.    Keep ya posted.  Ron Wright

I purchased Ensign 22 #221 late last year. It was built in 1964. I need two items, a winch handle and a boom vang. Below are pictures of the winch handle I need and the winch it accompanies. The boom vang I need is one I am uneducated on except it should be 4:1 advantage. Below is a picture of the boom slot and a picture of the connection area at the foot of the mast. I tried using Ensign Spars to see if they could help me, but I think they are still getting organized under the new ownership.

Thanks everyone.
