Torqeedo Remote Throttle
Author Last Post

Bill,

I have both the long shaft Torqeedo and the long shaft Honda 2.3.  The motor is on the starboard side of the transom. If I sail with either motor on the mount and tilted up, the lower parts of the motor will drag a bit in the water when we are heeled to starboard.

When my original long shaft 6hp Evinrude conked out, I found a barely used short shaft Mercury at a great price, but soon regretted the choice. I sail on Lake Pontchartrain, and whenever there’s any chop at all, the short shaft spends as much time out of the water as in. My problem was cured when I traded the short shaft for an older long shaft 3.5hp Nissan two-stroke. The Torqeedo looks very appealing, but I can’t get past the steep buy in. FWIW

My boat came with the short shaft version. So far, on the lake it does a serviceable job, though if a stink pot passes too closely, it can cavitate some. I will say it does clear the surface completely when I tilt it up to sail - don't know if the long shaft version does or not. And, I would guess there's a weight difference, though that might not be much of, or even, a consideration.

If I was buying one, I might be convinced to go with the long shaft. That just seems to be the universal advice from all of the users here on this forum. I would like to hear from those that motor more frequently and/or those in tidal waters using this motor. And, anybody leave the motor on the mount tilted while sailing?

I use a mount similar to the bronze motor mount and use the long shaft Torqeedo. I would not recommend a shorter version.

Guys,

The Yak Attack mount looks promising... The hot setup may turn out to be the Torqueedo shaft/core hanging off the transom locked in trail with the battery connected to it with that long cable and (the battery) stored under the seats. The remote throttle would then be connected to that battery and mounted in a suitable fashion. :-)

Check out the YakAttack mount. All you need to permanent my mount is a small piece of track then the mount quick connects.

Im considering the same thing. What length shaft would you recommend for the Ensign? I have the original bronze motor mount on the aft deck.

Thanks Tommy, Bill & Ed.

In some way I think the remote battery cable may be more important than the remote throttle. I don’t mind using the on-motor throttle, as long as I don’t have to check the battery status, but installing and removing the battery each time I sail is a pain. One time, a coule of years ago, I was not careful enough and broke oone of the p[lastic “legs.” The battery had to be shipped back to Torqeedo for a new battery case.

Hello Vic,

I have a remote throttle for the 1003 and am considering 2 different ways of mounting it in my boat. The first is fabricating a bracket mount that hinges out/up from under the combing or, a simple removable mounting block that can be temporarily pinned to the deck or a seat during use. I have included 2 pics of other people's solutions for reference. I'll let you know what my set-up looks like when I get to that point in the refit.

Also, I like the idea put forth of using an extension cable between the battery stored under a seat and the main drive unit. Anything to keep me off the aft deck while underway is fine by me!

Let me know what you decide...

A number of you have reported purchasing the remote throttle for your Torqeedo electric outboard. That seems like a reasonable solution to crawling over the rear deck to look at the information on control panel on the tiller of the motor.

Can you tell me where you mount the remote throttle, since, as I think about purchasing one, I can't imagine a convenient spot to mount the throttle in my Ensign?

Vic,

I haven’t yet come up with a solution for that either. I stow it in the battery bag, which stows below the tiller with the battery inside. I just pull it out when I need to use it.

So far that’s been a reasonable procedure as it’s only used sparingly. The other day I traveled much further than usual. I launched my boat about five miles from my new berth, so I motored the hour and a half and thought a lot about what a “permanent” solution might be.

what I finally resolved is that Torqeedo could be doing a lot more to provide solutions for boaters. It’s all on the right track, but more elegant solutions for various type boats would help. For now, I think it’s up to us to design a better way.

I chose to not mount remote throttle.  I set it on top the seat/bench in front of skipper while motor is in use, and then tuck it under the coaming when not in use.   May want to test like that first and see if acceptable to you before drilling holes.
