Awlgrip or similar on the deck
Author Last Post

I put kiwi grip on an ensign 10 years ago. It looks ok now, but not like awlgrip. More industrial look in my opinion. But very functional and good grip. It's not show room look. But I found it was very easy and inexpensive for a diy job, way better than tossing beach sand into hardware store paint.  It did take a few test panels ahead of time to figure out how to get desired texture as it easy to make it too aggressive.  I did use 2 part paint on the borders and since it's a small area it was easy to do with a hot dog shape roller and no tipping with brush and it yieled a nice two tone gray and white look which hides the flaws quite well

One product to check on is kiwi grip. Benefits are prep is simple. Do not have to sand back to gel coat and use a two part primer like you do for awl grip or other two part paints. It's water based and one coat is all you need.  It's not as durable as two parts. And it's got aggressive grip, but you can control that by how you roll it and how thick you apply it.  I put it on an ensign deck and ten years later it's still acceptable.

If you go awl grip or similar , the new thing is to use rubber grit. Can't remember the name, no sand or something like that. Jamestown should have it and links to videos for diy.  Have not used it myself, but have seen the results on bigger cat and it's very impressive.

Cheapest non skid is, paint with Rust-Oleum and put sugar or salt on top. Then rinse when cured.

Whatever route you go it's best to do a test panel of several square feet to learn. I did this with the kids grip. And the third test panel was the right grip, drying time, and color

#1029-the other woman has recently had major deck repair and painting. Several areas, bow, stern and at P&S chainplates there were deck core and fiberglass repairs. All deck penetrations were core bonded and the deck received new Awlgrip two-tone paint with non-skid on flat deck areas.

I do not have a breakdown of $$ cost for just the painting, but $3-4k seems about right.

You could use roller and tipping with brush and do it yourself if you were inclined to DIYS. The rub rail would need to be removed before painting. While the boat was being painted I cleaned the white rub rail. I used a diluted mixture of bleach and water and the rub rail is "white" again. I use 303 Aerospace protectant on the rub rail to keep it white.

The hull sides were repainted 9 years ago with white Awlgrip. I periodically use Awlgrip wash and Awlgrip Care sealant and the hull sides look like new after 9 years.

Thanks. That was my thought

I think $4000 is quite pricey. By comparison, I got a quote here to mediablast (soda, glass, sand) an entire hull for $800. Hard to imagine a gallon of paint and labor coming to $3200 more. I also plan to paint my deck.  I do not have non-skid tape to remove.  I plan to use Interlux Performance Epoxy with a roller/brush.  No way would I put that much money into paint.

The deck on 221 appears to have been painted previously and has some nonskid tape applied to it I’m thinking about sanding all that off and applying awlgrip or similar. does anyone have any experience with that or any recommendations? I’m also considering having It professionally done I had a quote for $4000 and I’m wondering if that’s a high middle or low price any recommendations there
