Ensign Two Axle Trailers
Author Last Post
John,

I apologize for the delayed reply, but I was out of town for the latter part of August.

When I won #2032 in June of 2014, the boat came with a 2-axle trailer made by Ensign Spars. The trailer, which has electric brakes, has worked quite well. It was used to transport #2032 from Marquette MI to Saratoga Lake, NY in July of 2014, and we used it to transport two Ensigns that were donated to the Saratoga Sailing Foundation for use in our sailing school. I have, however, had two frustrating issues with the trailer.

In the summer of 2016, I had to have all the wiring on the trailer replaced at rather high cost. At that time, the trailer had been in the water only one time, when my new boat was delivered to Saratoga Lake in 2014; and Saratoga Lake is fresh water. During the 2016 annual inspection we discovered that the electrical wiring was not working, and the copper conductors had corroded to such as extend that they crumbled when we tried to make new connections. All the wiring had to be replaced.

I have had had other boat and utility trailers over the years, and have never seen the electrical wiring of those trailers degrade in such a fashion in such a short period of time. The wiring on my other trailers has lasted more than 10 years.

The other issue is Ensign Spars has so far been unable to provide a mast holder for the trailer, even though it is designed for one. One issue may be that a weld seam intrudes into the square tube that receives the mast holder, preventing entry of what would otherwise be the proper sized post for the mast holder.

Regards,

Vic Roberts, #2032

After two trailer tire blow-outs on each of my round-trip journeys to the 2015 & 2017 National Championship Regatta I am in the market for a two axle, four tire trailer for future road trips.

I would appreciate receiving your experience and recommendation for builders of Ensign trailers with two axle/four tire configuration.
