Improving the condition of wood in the cockpit
Author Last Post
Stuart, you're a little short on details.  What's the hull number?  Ensign Classic?  Define your starting parameters, then you can figure out how to proceed.

Teak or Mahogany ?

Is the wood varnished, finished bright?  Are the benches / floors teak / oiled?  Is the finish gone?

There's a bunch of discussion / help at West Marine and Google.

If it's teak, Wash it, dry it and then lightly oil it with tung oil, or linseed oil.  You can buy commercial "teak oil", but it might have a sealer in it, which is a different kind of finish.  The commercial teak cleaners will be harsh and remove some wood, and open the grain, so save these for a last resort.

The wood work is not that old if it's been cared for at all.  Proceed carefully.

Hi Ensign sailors, I own Aura, which rolled out into the water in 2005, my question is what is a good way to improve the condition and appearance of the wood in the cockpit, as it stands now the wood is looking pretty ragged.

I was hoping that some of you could give me suggestions on how to cost effectively improve it's condition. A friend mentioned using either Tung Oil or Teak Oil to improve the condition and appearance of the wood.

Please let me know any suggestions.

Thank you
